Our History
1955 - A handful of people begin meeting in the home of Eva Green to pray for the community of Baldwinsville and the idea of a church being started here.
Summer of 1955 – Board of the Rochester Conference of the Wesleyan Methodist Church meets and voted to begin a new church in Baldwinsville. A house and adjoining property were purchased.
Summer of 1956 – a cinder block building was built as the first phase of the Community Wesleyan Church.
August 1956 – Mr. & Mrs. Jerard Aman came to be the pastor. They had just graduated from Houghton College in June of 1956.
September 13, 1956 – The first prayer meeting was held in the newly constructed church building. At the prayer meeting were Pastor Jerry and Ginny Aman, Eva Greene, Orly Austin, Dick & Ruth Hill with their children (Ron, Chuck and Sue)
September 23, 1956 – First Sunday service held in the church building.
October 14, 1956 – First official service held in the church. There were 33 in Sunday School, 50 in the morning worship service and 45 for the evening service.
In 1955 a handful of people began meeting at the home of Mrs. Eva Green for a prayer meeting with the hope of starting a church in Baldwinsville. A retired minister from Syracuse, Rev John McGraw, would come and lead the group in prayer and singing. The small group continued to grow. The Rochester District of the Wesleyan Methodist Church made this group a part of their work and in 1956 they helped to build a 2 room church made of cinder block. In August 1956, Rev Jerard Aman and his wife were called to be the first pastoral family. The first service to be held in the new building was a prayer meeting on September 23, 1956. The official opening service was held October 14, 1956 with 50 in attendance.
Reverend and Mrs. Aman were paid $5 a week. On April 7 th, 1958 the congregation voted to build a sanctuary next to the educational unit. The first service was held in February 1959. Rev Aman resigned sensing they needed a full time pastor. In the spring of 1959 the church called Rev. Gerry Jack to be their pastor. Rev Aman continued his secular employment and donated part of his wages to the new full time pastor.
After much growth, on April 22, 1973, ground was broken for an addition to sanctuary and a new front to the church. Through volunteer work the new building was completed by the 18 th anniversary celebration – October 13, 1974
After 18 years of ministry, the Jacks left to be missionaries in Puerto Rico. In 1977 Rev. Roger Rounds became the pastor and served 2 years before he felt a call to serve as a missionary in Australia. For 1 year the church was without a pastor and Earl Mills filled that role. In 1980, Lewis O’Vell became the pastor and he served for 4 years.
In 1984, Rev. Jim Willson and family became the senior pastor. In 1987 Carl & Cindy Chapman were hired as youth pastor. In 1999, Jim Willson resigned as pastor and Carl Chapman became the Sr. Pastor. He and his family continue to serve as the pastoral family of CWC.

Core Values of Community Wesleyan Church
A Commitment to Evangelism – We believe that lost people matter to God and therefore ought to matter to each Christian and the church. (Luke 5:30-32; Luke 15; Matthew 18:12-14)
A Commitment to Discipleship – We believe that becoming a Christian is not the end but a beginning. Each Christian should manifest authenticity and yearn for continuous growth in one’s relationship with Jesus Christ. (sanctification /holiness) (Hebrews 12:1; Hebrews 6:1; II Peter 1:5-6)
A Commitment to Prayer – We believe that prayer moves the hand of God and is a key
ingredient to the growth of a person and ministry. (I Chronicles 16:11; Matthew 7:7; Luke 18:1)
A Commitment to Ministry – We believe that each Christian has been given spiritual gifts and the church functions best when each person is using their gifts. (Romans 12:4-8; I Corinthians 12:12-31; Ephesians 4:11-13)
A Commitment to Fellowship – We believe that loving relationships should permeate every aspect of church life. (Acts 2:42; Philippians 1:3-5; Proverbs 27:17)
A Commitment to Family – We believe that the church should be a place where the whole family and its relationships can be strengthened and grow. (Acts 16:33-34; Ephesians 5:22-33, 6:1-4)
A Commitment to being Bible-based – We believe that the Bible and the Bible alone holds the transforming truth for mankind and is the foundation for all teaching and ministry. (II Timothy 3:16, Psalm 119:105)
A Commitment to Excellence – We believe that excellence honors God and inspires people. (Colossians 3:17, II Timothy 2:15)
A Commitment to Cultural Awareness – We believe that the church should recognize the times we live in and respond accordingly, while remaining doctrinally pure. (I Corinthians 9:19-23, I Chronicles 12:32)
A Commitment to Missions-mindedness – We believe that a Christian’s responsibility to share the good news of Jesus Christ goes beyond just where a person lives. (Acts 1:8)
- Adopted September 12, 2002 by the LBA
Core Values are constant, passionate, biblical core beliefs that drive a church. They communicate what we believe is important. They help us to embrace positive change. They help to shape our church by influencing what we do and where we will go.

How to Become a Christian
You can be free from the guilt of your past and have an assuring hope for the future. The Bible contains some practical steps of faith.
Step One : Acknowledge your past. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23). Agree with God (“confess” means to agree with) that your life of rebellion, against His will and His Word, is sin. “Repent” means to be sorry enough to quit sinning and turn to a new life.
Step Two : Invite the Lord Jesus Christ into your life. To all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12). Invite Him to be the Master of your life. Just as we have a chronological birthday, we can have a spiritual birthday. We can be “born again” by trusting Christ to come into our lives. Here’s a sample prayer:
Lord Jesus, I admit that I have sinned against You. I am sorry for my sin and I trust You to forgive me. Come into my life and help me to serve You all the days of my life. Amen.
Step Three : Trust God's promise of forgiveness. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Stand on the promise of the Bible. God cannot lie. If He says that your past is forgiven - IT IS!
Step Four : Openly declare your new relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Whosoever acknowledges Me before men, I will also acknowledge him before My Father in heaven (Matt. 10:32). Tell someone else about your decision. Ask the pastor about openly declaring your faith.
Step Five : Grow by reading God’s Word. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow . . . (1 Pet. 2:2). Attend a Bible believing/teaching church (such as your local Wesleyan church). Get into a Bible study (read the Gospel of Mark and then read an additional chapter of the Bible each day.) Pray each day (in praise and thanksgiving to God, confessing personal needs and trusting God for the needs of others).
Let God work a miracle in your life! If you have just made this decision for Christ, please email us so we can pray with you and get you started in your new life.
